  • In "Conservation or cruelty" we take a 6 minute look at places and individuals that breed and exhibit large felines, many in the name of conservation. In the US, unaccredited road side zoos, pseudo sanctuaries and personal exhibits across the country that house lions, tigers and leopards are breeding them in countless numbers to attract the public. We look at some that are open to the public and sadly probably rate around "average" of the facilities that we know of. You be the judge...is it conservation or cruelty? *BCR proudly supports real conservation efforts in The Snow Leopard Trust, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and the Sumatran Tiger Trust to name a few. Even our own founder was fooled years ago into fake conservation; please don't let it happen to you. Log onto: www.bigcatrescue for more info.

  • Follow us as we take to the road to talk to a man that claims to have heard a Florida panther far north of its current habitat. Is Florida really ready to limit growth and set aside enough land for its state animal? Is the Florida panther trying to make a come back, and will there be enough room for it to do so? We all hope so. But with its numbers only around or less than 100 and with the high amount that are killed by vehicles on the road, things don’t look good. And just where is all the money raised to help save this animal and the Everglades going? For more feline info: www.bigcatrescue.org

  • Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Fl. provides a permanent home to over 140 exotic cats. We have limited space and try to rescue what we can as well as try to get tougher legislation passed to lessen the amount of unwanted big cats. Sometimes people will get a smaller exotic feline like a serval or bobcat and hope that due to its size it will make a better “pet.” They soon learn that we speak the truth when we say exotic cats don’t make good pets. And other times people will buy from breeders a hybrid variation like a bengal cat or a savannah cat with often the same results. This video takes you along with us on a rescue of a savannah cat. We ask animal lovers to take in unwanted domestics and not to buy into this big cat crisis we have here in America. Thanks for watching, and for more info please log onto: www.bigcatrescue.org

  • At Big Cat Rescue we often try to help others understand why the cat populations are going down in places like Asia and Africa. We sometime forget that this is happening in our own backyard. Take a look at the current situation of the Florida Panther. Even though their numbers are slightly higher than reported in the 1980’s after decades of over hunting there are more killed on the roads than ever before. In 2006 we had 11 endangered panthers killed by vehicles. And in 2007 we have 15 so far. Their total population is an estimated 80-100. *you will hear Brian say 14 twice in the video as in the time it took from filming to producing another cat was killed) What will be the future of these predators here in Florida? For more info on the Panther (cougar/ mountain lion etc…) go to: http://myfwc.com/panther *Special thanks to those that appeared in this video and those who helped me collect panther data.

  • Watch as we let Joseph and his pride of another lion and two tigers into their new large enclosure. These cats have been settling in since October and getting use to their new life here at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. Sadly, there are still at least hundreds of cats like them out there in the U.S. Some states have little or no laws regarding ownership of big cats. And those that have tough laws lack the abilities to enforce them. Few people realize the small amount that eventually find a decent home at one of the few good rescues/sanctuaries out there still take away resources that could be spent on saving these animals and their habitats out in the wild. www.bigcatrescue.org Thanks again to those that helped us from the Wild Animal Orphanage (Texas), Columbus Zoo, Humane Society of Ohio, Knox County Ohio, IFAW, & to our wonderful volunteers and supporters who made this all possible.

  • Welcome to another edition of Big Cat Rescue’s species spotlight. In this episode we look at a lesser cat called the Caracal. Their name is taken from a Turkish word that means “black ear.” The Caracal is known best for its large black ears that it uses for its great hunting ability. The Caracal roams the grasslands and open plains from Africa through the Middle East. While its numbers are holding in Africa, we see populations becoming extinct in India due to farming and the unrestricted manufacturing of charcoal from the wild weeds, especially in the Banni grasslands. By supporting animal conservation in these areas we can help save the land for the Caracals and other wildlife. Captive Caracals in the US suffer from people trying to keep them as pets, as well as trying to crossbreed them with domestic cats for the pet trade. • In this edition of specie spotlight we look at the very popular white tiger (which actually isn't a separate specie of tiger.) White tigers are produced from inbreeding and they actually weaken the captive tiger gene pool and they do nothing to help real conservation of the tiger. For more info on this: http://www.bigcatrescue.org... *Please urge anyone you see exhibiting white tigers to get them fixed as we CAN stop this abuse in our generation. Since they bring in $$$, many places breed them, and this has to be stopped in order to save the real tigers. Thank you.

  • In "Big Cat/ Little Cat" we join Brian as he tells us a little of the similarities of these felines. Domestic cats get a lot of their habits from their wild ancestors. • TIGER *dedicated to the guards who put their life on the line to protect the tiger and its habitat. Wild Tiger numbers BENGAL TIGER= 1,300-2,000 AMUR/ SIBERIAN TIGER= 400-500 INDOCHINESE TIGER= 700-1,300 SUMATRAN TIGER= 250-300 MALAYAN TIGER= 400-600 SOUTH CHINA TIGER= 10? Total Tiger captive numbers 10,000 +/- in various situations. (many are Amur/Bengal mixed) WHAT I THINK WILL SAVE THE TIGER: Letting U.S. corporations know that we want to be aware where our resources like Palm Oil come from. Our government letting China know we are unhappy with their wildlife policies (namely tiger parts used in traditional medicine) and poor protection of their endangered animals. Better protection for the tigers in their native habitats and their prey species by properly arming and funding the anti-poaching units, and better regulations allowing them to search for illegal trade. www.iucn.org www.wwf.org www.cawtglobal.org www.wpsi-india.org www.defenders.org www.savethetigerfund.org
