Dear Toronto #40 - Pedestrian Sundays at Kensington Market
The last Sunday in every month from May to October is a Pedestrian Sunday in Kensington Market. The area gets swarmed by tons of people, all of them taking in the sights and sounds of the many buskers in the area.
Keri (of www.TheCanadianExplorer.com) and I ventured to the H.M.C.S. York for Doors Open 2009. She refused to tell me what we were doing prior to sitting in her studio/Jetta, preferring instead to keep her love of all things navy/military as a surprise.
On February 21st, 2009, Bloor-Yorkville's Icefest Festival took over the affluent retail neighbourhood. Rebecca and Calvin tag-teamed to capture the sculptors and their emerging frozen wonders.
On January 20th, 2008, I Bike T.O. held their first (hopefully annual) Toronto Bike Awards at the Gladstone Hotel, complete with a winter-layering reverse strip-tease skit, cycle-machine races and live music from GUH and DJ duo Dorian and Dorian.
On Sunday January 25th, CUPE 3903 held a rally in front of Queen's Park in Toronto to protest back to work legislation announced by Ontario premiere Dalton McGuinty. The event was attended by several hundred union supporters from all walks of life.
The five guys behind galleryDK recently launched PhotoLab. The exhibit features over 200 photographic pieces of work from an international talent pool of over 80 artists.
Earlier today thousands of Torontonians braved the cold and snow in support of two opposing rallies. I'd guess at least 2,000 made their way to Nathan Phillips Square in support of a coalition government, while about 500 rallied at Queen's Park to support the Conservatives and oppose the coalition. There was certainly a lot of strong words said on both sides, and the occasional clash as seen near the end of the video. Regardless of your political inclination, I think today's events speak volumes about how contentious an issue this is for Canadians and how passionate they've become about it.
Gabe Toth is a photographer in Toronto who does some incredible portrait photography, so I was happy to come by and document his latest photoshoot with Superstein’s John Walke. Probably NSFW. For more videos check out http://DearToronto.com
Adam (dressed as Doctor Who, NOT Sylar) and Ryan (dressed as Frank West, and not pictured anywhere as he was manning the camera) hit Church Street in Toronto on Halloween night to talk to paintings, shower curtains, and Facebook. www.DearToronto.com

Dear Toronto #27 - Fashion We-err, Marath-err, BRAAAAAAINS!
October 19th started out as a relatively quiet Sunday by Toronto standards, but little did we know that by the end of the day we would have an insatiable thirst for sweet, tender, under-nourished frontal lobes.
Frigid weather, unclosed streets and some poor woman having been run over by a streetcar notwithstanding, Toronto's 2008 edition of Nuit Blanche was successful in keeping many of us way out past our bed times. This vid represents what we saw outside of La Momma Morta which Adam caught on his stumble home. View more videos and subscribe at DearToronto.com
Nuit Blanche is an annual âall-night contemporary art thingâ that sees hundreds of thousands of people come out to see public art sprout up along the city streets. Itâs always a really great feeling being out and seeing the streets packed with people who are all so excited to see what the nightâs got ahead of them. Enjoy the haunting performance âLa Momma Mortaâ staged right next to Torontoâs historic St. James Cathedral and look forward to more video from Nuit Blanche coming soon! Buskerfest hits Toronto once a year and buskers from all over the world are invited to strut their stuff. In the video are a small selection of the performances in the street festival that occured on the first of its three day run this year.
Juneâs Pride Week in Toronto has come and gone, but weâre still drowning in a ton of fun video. Crazy factoid: many of the girls in the front of this very hyped-up crowd came from the US, Europe and beyond to see her perform!
Hummingbirds can to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 15â80 times per second (depending on the species). They can fly backwards, and are the only group of birds able to do so.
We sure seem to have a thing for Posterchild, but only because his work is awesome. Recently, PC held an exhibition at Hot Shot Gallery wherein he hung up his dead astronaut dolls for Earthlings to ogle.
Le Tigreâs Jd Samson and Johanna Fatemanâs group Men had a srsly oresome 2 hour DJ set at Pride Toronto this year, and were joined on stage by members of Kids on TV for two songs. John Caffrey canât resist shakinâ it when thereâs beats to be heard.
Weâre at Pride Toronto 2008, getting tons of crazy video of the various bands, performers, and people on the street. Instead of saving the best for last weâd just give the best there is right up front.
The Idiotarod is a dog sled race in Toronto. Except instead of sleds the contestants use shopping carts. And instead of dogs the carts are pulled by people. Also, thereâs very little chance of getting bitten by a rabid huskie or mauled by a bear.
This year saw an amazing turnout given the inclement weather earlier in the day, and we were there right in the thick of the action to capture every bit of it. Watch as Rebecca, Ryan and I nearly destroy one of our cameras making this very fun video.
