  • Post-traumatic stress is a common problem among American service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. To combat the stigma that keeps some members of the military, veterans and their families from seeking needed psychological help, the Department of Defense launched the Real Warriors Campaign. The campaign, themed "Real Warriors--Real Battles--Real Strength," is hosted by the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCOE). This multimedia public education effort makes reaching out easier by providing access to psychological health information and resources 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Individuals can chat online with psychological health coaches through the campaign website, www.realwarriors.net. They may also reach out by calling the Outreach Center at 866-966-1020. • As car navigation devices get more affordable, an increasing number of drivers are buying vehicles with GPS. OnStar, the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and communication services is catering to its growing market. OnStar announced the introduction of two new navigational services to complement and enhance its existing service. The first, destination download, enables subscribers with screen-based navigation systems to press a button and connect with an advisor. The advisor finds the location, sends it to the system and an icon pops up and asks ‘do you want to go now?’ The second service, a partnership with MapQuest.com called OnStar eNav, allows subscribers with a Turn-by-Turn Navigation-capable vehicle to find and save destinations on their computer and have them sent to their vehicle. The directions can then be accessed through voice-guided commands with a touch of a button. Produced for General Motors

  • Beauty is a $50.4 billion dollar industry with approximately 7,500 new products launched each year. By making promises to reduce the signs of aging, naturally plump up your lips, or reduce cellulite, all of these products are vying for "must buy" status. Knowing which beauty products work and deliver on their claims is a costly exercise of trial and error. Every October for 12 years the editors of ALLURE have produced the annual "Best of Beauty" issue—taking the guess work out of beauty shopping. This year they tested more than 2,000 products, consulted cosmetic chemists, dermatologists and hair and makeup artists to find the best concealers, shampoos, mascara's and more. They also identified the biggest beauty breakthroughs of the year—the products that really solve problems, far surpass the hype of product marketing or utilize the latest in anti-aging research. As the Consumer Report for beauty, The "Best of Beauty" issue has become the ultimate shopping list. Produced for ALLURE

  • What will it be? Hydrogen, diesel, E85, or something else? That was the question at this year's North American International Auto Show as nearly every automaker announced an alternative propulsion vehicle. Ranging from bio-fuel to fuel cell, it is clear that hybrids are still the most energy efficient technologies available today. Many "next generation" gas-electric hybrids were unveiled. While dual-mode hybrids are efficient at stop and go traffic, they don't quite add as much on the highways. A new concept plug-in hybrid from Saturn can potentially go for 10 miles on pure electric power, before needing to use gas. But whether its battery technology, plugging into the grid, powering vehicles from solar, nuclear, or wind, all renewable fuels come into play. Automakers say that having a diverse set of alternatives is the best way to reduce our dependence on gasoline. Produced for General Motors

  • Fibromyalgia: 3 Strategies for Workplace Success Women and men have opposing views on many topics, and it turns out that they also have different takes on chronic pain. According to a new survey of women and men with chronic pain released today by the nonprofit HealthyWomen, the leading independent health information source for women, women are more than twice as likely as men to believe that women have a higher tolerance for pain (76% versus 32%, respectively). In addition, almost twice as many women as men with chronic pain (59% of women vs. 36% of men) feel they are considered to be "complainers" because of their chronic pain. The survey (of which 16% of participants had fibromyalgia) is part of a new educational campaign - "She Said, He Said: Understanding Gender and Pain" - launched today by HealthyWomen (formerly the National Women's Health Resource Center). The initiative is supported through a sponsorship by Pfizer Inc. The campaign is designed to help women and men better understand and ...

  • Consider this, you get in your car, turn on the navigation system and then type in the address to your destination. And instead of you driving your car there, the car drives itself. Engineers and students from the nation's top universities alike are competing to develop exactly that, a self-driving car. The competition is sponsored by the Department of Defense. They are eager to apply the technology on the battlefield, to keep soldiers out of harms way and help save lives. There are also many civilian uses for the technology. Self-driving cars will be programmed not to crash into each other, they will reduce traffic congestion and they will also reduce stops and starts, saving on energy and reducing emissions. Automotive safety technologies like cruise control, lane departure warning and blind zone alerts already exist, and it won't be long until cars will start to drive themselves.
