  • The Philharmonic Orchestra of the three-time Grammy Award winning Northwood High School performs "O Holy Night." Joel Carlson conducting. December 20, 2006. Irvine, California. / Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till He appear'd and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angels' voices! Oh night divine, Oh night when Christ was born; Oh night divine, Oh night, Oh night Divine. Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here come the wise men from Orient land. The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger, Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend! Behold your King, Behold your King.

  • It's hard to believe that this song came from a German opera, but it did. Die Dreigroschenoper, composed by Kurt Weill, premiered in Berlin in 1928. Known in English as The Threepenny Opera, the opera tells of robberies, murders, and other deadly deeds. The song, Mack the Knife, has been made famous by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Bobby Darin. Here, the Jazz One Band of Northwood High School plays it with tenor sax soloist Steven Strenk, trombone soloist Ellen Miranda, and Joel Carlson conducting. June 6, 2007. / Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear. And it shows them pearly white. Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe. And he keeps it out of sight. Ya know when that shark bites, with his teeth, babe. Scarlet billows start to spread. Fancy gloves, though, wears old MacHeath, babe. So there’s nevah, nevah a trace of red. Now on the sidewalk uuh, huh whoo sunny mornin’ uuh, huh. Lies a body just oozin' life eeek! And someone’s sneakin' ‘round the corner. Could that someone be Mack the Knife?
