  • Viva campy jungle safari! Queen of the Amazons is a delightfully absurd romp through the African wilderness. When a woman’s fiancé turns up missing, she tracks him down only to find that he has gone into the jungle and been missing for months! Hiring a skilled guide, they journey deep into the bush through countless dangers: like stock footage of tigers! The hilarity continues when she finds her fiancé captured by white skinned “Amazons” in Africa who speak English like Tarzan. Her beau has been enslaved by the Amazon Queen, and refuses to give him up. In the forties, Queen of the Amazon was a thrilling look at a distant part of the globe. Now it’s still tons of fun for different reasons, and still more than worth watching for a good time in the jungle.

  • The extraordinary Hollywood beauty Venetia Stevenson stars as the beautiful young innocent in the classic chiller City of the Dead. This exemplary horror film creates suspense and fright by constructing eerie and haunting images and atmospheres, as well as with tried and true devices: murder, secret evil, cults, witches, blood, and (of course) gore. With fine acting from veterans like Christopher Lee, City of the Dead attains magnificent degrees of mayhem and dark danger with a quality that few horror films can boast – it was a contemporary of Hitchcock’s Psycho and they are similar films. City of the Dead is top notch horror fare, and should be seen by all fans of the macabre.

  • Silent Film sensation Buster Keaton was one of the most innovative and successful comics during the early days of the motion picture. Known for his outrageous physical antics, as well as the use of props and slapstick comedy, Keaton made movies with a bravado and imagination that few will ever achieve. Here in Daydreams, Keaton plays a young man who’s off to seek his fortune in the big city. The sidesplitting gags come from Keaton trying, and failing, in virtually ever job imaginable. Daydreams is another gem in Keaton’s large body of top notch cinematic work that never fails to please.

  • Author Zane Grey was the inspiration for over one hundred Western Films and Mark of the Avenger is one of the best films based from Grey’s novels. It’s unusual in that the hero, played by the rugged Douglas Dumbrille, is no goodie-two-shoes but a man with a checkered past who has turned to crime. An outlaw from his home town where he’s wanted for a murder he didn’t commit, Dumbrille sneaks back in to town to see his daughter, who he discovers is hopelessly caught up in the sinister plots of bad men. What follows is a whirlwind of gun slinging action as Dumbrille makes to straighten everything out by any means necessary. Mark of the Avenger is a tempest of classic Western mayhem.

  • An amazing Dick Tracy adventure! Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome is an absorbing cinematic experience thanks to Boris Karloff, most famous for his powerful portrayal of Frankenstein. In this film, Dick Tracy is played by the more than able Ralph Byrd who soars as the stern and clever detective created by Chester Gould. The story revolves around insidious bank robbers who utilize a paralyzing gas to asphyxiate everyone present, leaving no witnesses. In order to crack the case, Tracy is helped along by his sweetie Tess Trueheart, played by the classically gorgeous Anne Gwynne. But the true star of the film is Karloff, whose monstrous performance as lead villain Gruesome steals every scene. Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome is top notch 1940’s detective fun.

  • The Battle of San Pietro (1945) is such a shocking, frank, and powerful war documentary that the US Army refused to show it! Master director John Huston’s actual footage of one of the most grueling and horrendous battles in all of World War II is nothing short of harrowing. The actual Battle of San Pietro, fought on Italian soil, was of the highest strategic importance for the Allied Forces. Thus the Americans threw hundreds of soldiers against an entrenched, fortified, and well equipped German force. The chaotic, devastating combat that took place, as well as the heroic struggle of the fighting men, will never be forgotten. John Huston’s The Battle of San Pietro is unquestionably one of the most important and moving documentaries ever made.

  • This 1950’s film chronicles how four high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area molded safe teen drivers by participating in the Mobil (now Exxonmobil) Economy Run, a race whose objective was to drive around the city within a designated period of time while avoiding penalties like speeding or violating traffic laws. The driver would be accompanied by a professional racecar driver, who would give the teens advice on how to drive safely and save gas. Scenes of the kids dancing in a malt shop and driving around San Francisco in vintage hot rods, street rods, and rat rods is included, but the real gem in this film is the great footage of San Francisco itself, including the Golden Gate Bridge. California teen drivers education sure was fun in the 1950s, and On the Run provides the experience of San Francisco history as well as drag strip racing history and old school hot rods.

  • From many different camera angles, including aerial shots, this silent, color film captures the awe inspiring explosions from the Nevada weapons test called Project Dugout. In this picturesque example of military history, through the use of diagrams and some animation, the preparation of the blast site is shown, including the underground chambers that were filled with five 20-ton chemical row-charge explosives. The tests were conducted in order to assess the effect of the explosives on hard, dry rock. The footage of the explosions is intense and includes real-time and slow motion film of the jaw dropping blasts. The crater effect caused by the explosives is captured in great detail – sometimes with people in the shot in order to show the huge scale of the destruction. The explosive tests for rowing produce huge explosions that caused giant, gaping craters, are captured in startling detail in this great footage.

  • This 1950's personal hygiene film teaches young children care of the hair and fingernails. A somewhat disturbing magical fairy shows the picture of a very unkempt little boy with messy hair and long claw-like fingernails, saying “I always keep that picture on my wall, just to remind me how many boys and girls still need my help.” She waves her magic wand and introduces some other children who need tips from the fairy. She recommends that they wash their hair at least once a week, and advocated never using another person’s comb or hat for fear of lice, which are shown in an animated diagram. She instructs one little girl, Alice, to brush her hair until it shines, or 100 strokes of the brush. She also tells the children, boys and girls, how to clean and manicure their fingernails. This is an interesting hygiene film, thanks to the creepy fairy godmother and wacky kids.

  • This film is a monument to post World War II cultural insistence on conformity, uniformity, and social standards. Following a cookie cutter young couple, the film discusses the various ways in which it’s important to maintain rigorous standards of health and hygiene. The amount of detail and precision used would make an OCD patient blush by today’s standards! “Make sure your hem line is even!” insists the narrator. How to be Well Groomed is the pinnacle antique etiquette and social guidance films.

  • When the Lincoln Junior High Teen Club decides to sponsor a dance, George, an insecure youngster, must take the plunge into the world of dating. Fortunately, he and his group of buddies all manage to find dates to the Winter Frolic! Thus begins a classic 1950’s social etiquette film on dating. The group of kids in this movie represents the varied emotional and physical development that exists in George's age group. This film presents a somewhat realistic view of the limited nature of social interaction between young teens, but also includes some unintentionally funny moments (like how George’s date is a full foot taller than him). Studs Terkel even makes a cameo as a helpful swimming teacher. On the whole, Beginning to Date provides a healthy dose of retro culture, fun, and goofiness from a socially structured era in American history.
