  • Dawn of the Great Divide would be leading cowboy hero Buck Jones' last film before his life and career was tragically cut short. The film is an excellent final chapter in a lengthy body of work that Jones amassed while in Hollywood. Based on a James Oliver Curwood adventure novel, Jones must protect a wagon that needs to cross through unsettled land. Jones is backed up by the other Rough Riders, Raymond Hatton and Rex Bell; but as usual Jones is the star. A particular high point is his exhilarating showdown with villain Roy Barcroft. Dawn of the Great Divide is a rousing and fiery western

  • Battleship Potemkin is a feature film classic from master Russian director Sergei Eisenstein. The thrust of the movie is a dramatic retelling of the events leading to the Bolshevik Revolution. The film centers on Russian ship Prince Potemkin where a horribly bloody mutiny took place. Eisenstein signals this as the jumping off point for the Revolution. The cast of the film were all amateur hand picked by Eisenstein, and his treatment of people in the film lends more to the character of masses than to individuals. This is truly Eisenstein’s most powerful and lasting work. Battleship Potemkin soars as one of the greatest silent films ever made.

  • This film was produced in order to educate U.S. Air Force members about atomic bombs. Through a combination of animation and stock footage of actual bomb tests, the bombs themselves are thoroughly explained and described. The film then sets out to dispel the “myth” that atomic bombs can be dangerous in peacetime. In a striking example of American propaganda, the film shows various situations during which a bomb might be dropped or otherwise damaged during peaceable transport and reassures the audience that the explosions that might result are not dangerous in any way. This film was an attempt to calm and reassure US Air Force pilots about the dangers of nuclear weapons, nuclear attacks and about nuclear war in general.

  • Dick Tracy is one of the most successful serial detectives in American pop culture history. Here in Dick Tracy, Detective, the gumshoe with the two-way wristwatch is wonderfully portrayed by Morgan Conway in an incredibly entertaining film adaptation. Shot in a style evocative of dark and sinful 40s film noir, the picture brings to life the highly stylized world invented by cartoonist Chester Gould. The overly ugly caricature villains, classically modeled love interest, and hard boiled mystery is all here. Fortunately, the casting is superb and the direction deft, making the translation onto the silver screen seamless. Dick Tracy, Detective is a splendiferous ride through dark and exciting mystery.

  • The Great Gabbo is a fascinating psychological drama starring the captivating Erich von Stroheim. One of the most brilliant film directors of all time, von Stroheim was also an arresting actor whose screen presence is rarely rivaled today. In his most wide ranging and complex role, von Stroheim plays a profound but emotionally tortured ventriloquist who uses his dummy Otto to let out his rage. The beautiful and remarkable Betty Compson plays von Stroheim’s assistant who loves him, but has trouble getting past his deeply troubled mind. Compson is excellent, but this film is about von Stroheim and his deterioration into insanity. Powerfully subtle, richly simple, The Great Gabbo is an artistic triumph thanks to the genius of Erich von Stroheim.

  • Set during the Mexican Revolution, The Fighter is a hard hitting cinematic experience, weaving together heroism, boxing, tragedy, and politics. Based on the novel “The Mexican” by Jack London, the film stars superb actor Richard Conte as a young man who’s lost everything when his family, and entire village, is massacred by the Mexican dictatorship. Conte joins the revolutionaries, but realizes that he could perhaps support their efforts best by earning big bucks as a prizefighter. The boxing scenes, without question, are some of the most powerful and brutal ever filmed. Shakespearian superstar Lee J. Cobb contributes a strong performance as well, which elevates The Fighter to the level of classic.

  • This 1961 U.S. Civil Defense film is significant because it was among the first of its kind to characterize nuclear fallout as dangerous. Making the claim that every U.S. citizen lives within fallout range of a “likely nuclear attack target,” the film uses maps and various shots of highways, suburbs, crowds, and pedestrians to show the potential for fallout to affect everyone. The use of dramatic music and narration suggests that this was a typical “scare film” meant to induce the public to take the threat of nuclear fallout seriously. There is even footage of a man dying in a hospital bed, presumably of radiation sickness. Various methods for surviving nuclear war for humans and even livestock are shown. Not a cheery Cold War propaganda relic, this film about the dangers and effects of radiation is a serious affair. Fallout shelters and obtaining them was a serious concern for a family terrified of nuclear radiation, illness, sickness, and poisoning.

  • Dr. Christian Meets the Women is an excellent entry in the amazingly popular Depression era Dr. Christian series. Dr. Christian is a good natured and clever town doctor played by Jean Hersholt. Hersholt first played Dr. Christian on the radio and his friendly Danish accent and humble manner was an enormous success. The character translated well onto the silver screen and six movies were made and well received. Eerily pertinent today, Dr. Christian Meets the Women involves a quack doctor who’s selling miracle diet pills. It’s up to our good doctor to rectify the damage done by the poor quality drugs. Dr. Christian Meets the Women is a fine film that’s wholesome and genuine.

  • Hunchbacks, vampires, and hammy acting! Dead Men Walking is nothing short of phenomenal “bad” cinema. From its outrageously camp overacting to its cleverly used low budget, this film is a sidesplitting faux macabre tale that relishes in the ridiculous. Where to begin in describing the spectacular ludicrousness? For starters, the leading man George Zucco plays the two main characters in the film: brothers who are physicians who want to kill each other. And one brother becomes a vampire. And there’s a hunchbacked assistant. The god fearing townspeople are kind enough to form a lynch mob to elevate this classic even further. Dead Men Walking is priceless entertainment.

  • Hollywood bombshell Hedy Lamarr lights up the screen in Dishonored Lady, a poignant and moving story of love and tragedy. Lamarr, who is often remembered just for her magnificent beauty, was a serious actress and this was a subtle and layered performance. Lamarr is Madeleine Damien, an emotionally conflicted and overworked magazine editor who decides to take a new direction with her life. Embracing her passion for art and making it her new career, she also finds wholesome romance with a good natured doctor. But all gets put in jeopardy when she gets mixed up with an old lover who’s less scrupulous, and involves her in a murder. Dishonored Lady is a top flight dramatic experience, thanks largely to taut dialogue and sharp acting. Also, did I mention Hedy Lamarr is a real looker?

  • Famous etiquette coach Emily Post presents and narrates this film on how to behave properly at a dinner party. The film starts out with Mrs. Post in her garden in Edgartown, Massachusetts, wearing a floral dress, pearls, white gloves, and hat, talking about how most people feel unsure of their table manners at a dinner party. Having touched upon social anxiety, the film then moves quickly into genuine Emily Post etiquette. At a formal dinner party Post instructs diners on how to eat awkward foods like soup (sip straight from the bowl), spaghetti, asparagus, and sticky desserts. These tricky dishes can be quite a challenge to proper dinner etiquette. Post shows the audience which utensils to use for each course, how to deal with “unwanted morsels,” and how to carve dinner entrees. Some examples of bad manners are also shown in an effort to keep the intended male audience from persisting in any bad habits they might already have. Classic Emily Post quotes punctuate this florid film about dinner ...

  • Bursting at the seams with ludicrous physical comedy, the short silent film Dogs of War produces belly laughs that can stay with a viewer for days. Starring in this film are The Little Rascals, one of the most successful comedy groups in American cinematic history. Dogs of War features ridiculous childish pranks and play, including a war reenactment fought with rotten vegetables. But aside from the always fun gags, The Little Rascals are also historically significant because the gang was composed of mixed races and genders which were treated equally, no comic relief stereotypes. The kids are great, the encounters are hilarious, and the movie works through and through. Dogs of War is a keeper.

  • This 1951 film, sponsored by the U.S. Federal Civil Defense Administration, attempts to convince citizens to stay in their cities and fight in the event of a nuclear attack and nuclear war in America. Framed by a conversation between a newspaper editor and his colleague, the film claims that by fleeing threatened cities, citizens would be traitors contributing to decreased productivity and low morale. Instead the film insists citizens stay in their cities to help fight fires, clean up debris, and aid their neighbors. The film claims that people should not fear radiation and nuclear fallout as it clears up in a day or two. This downplaying of the dreadful effects of radiation is a recurring theme in American Cold War propaganda. Many different scenes showing war-torn European cities and mass evacuations, and even footage of New York’s Holland Tunnel and Penn Station, punctuate this amazing civil defense film that's rank with propaganda techniques.

  • Dementia: Daughter of Horror is one of the most innovative horror movies ever made. Akin to Lynch’s Eraserhead and Polanksi’s Repulsion, this film is a dark decent into madness and confusion – truly horrific. Other then the narration by Ed McMahon, there is no dialogue. And yet the characters are developed, interesting, and frightening. Adrienne Barrett is the lead as a young girl journeying through a wild night in the city where murder and gore are commonplace. Is it real? Barrett doesn’t know and neither does the viewer. A creative masterwork that creates terror without any of the usual cheap props, Dementia: Daughter of Horror is an enduring classic of its genre.

  • Love, loss, and battle at the time when Jesus of Nazareth walked the earth! The Great Commandment is a powerful epic Christian film from the late nineteen thirties. What distinguishes this film from other Christian epics is that it deals much more closely with the simple lives, hopes, and dreams of common zealots who were persecuted by the Romans for following Christ. Strong performances help to underscore the message of forgiveness and love without being heavy handed. Unpredictable and clever, especially for thirties’ filmmaking, The Great Commandment is a penetrating story of romance and resistance against the Roman establishment and the power of the Christ.
