Check out more cool artists on VBS met Carlos Amorales two years ago when he had a big show at the Yvon Lambert Gallery in New York. Instead of showing a collection of his wide variety of paintings, animations, or sculptures he covered the huge gallery space with thousands of black paper moths. The installation was called Black Cloud and it looked like a freeze frame of a plague invading the art space. It was beautiful, intriguing and menacing at the same time, which is precisely what makes Amoralesâ work fascinating.

In the late 70s they started work on the Temples of Humankind, a subterranean compound of massive, ornately decorated rooms that basically required them to hollow out an entire mountain in the Italian alps. Not only did they pull it off, but somehow they managed to keep the whole operation under wraps until 1991 when they were just about ready. At first, the Italian Government was all "WHAT?!" and tried to destroy the temples, but then they got inside and their Whats transformed into Whoas before finally settling into quiet Wows. Damanhur's residents believe in a lot of things that are either really awesome or really goofy (depending on how awesome/goofy you are), such as plants having the ability to make music. Shulgin hasn't been hip to the internet from its very beginning, but he's definitely been onboard since at least the Compuserve days. In the early 90s, he was one of the first artsy types to adopt the then-brand-new World Wide Web as a medium, creating web pages filled with maddening arrays of random-seeming pictures and text blocks and hidden links to games and secret files and similarly weird and frustrating link pages, as well as helping curate the work of his net-art contemporaries. Shulgin was also the organizer of the world's first international exhibition of people's computer desktops.
