After we went back and forth with their representatives for months, they finally said they were going to allow 16 journalists into the country to cover the Arirang Mass Games in Pyongyang. Then, ten days before we were supposed to go, they said, "No, nobody can come." Then they said, "OK, OK, you can come. But only as tourists." We had no idea what that was supposed to mean. They already knew we were journalists, and over there if you get caught being a journalist when you're supposed to be a tourist you go to jail. We don't like jail. And we're willing to bet we'd hate jail in North Korea.

I learned how to clear malfunctions and fix jams. I learned how to do tactical and emergency reloads. I learned how to shoot at night, with a flashlight in my left hand and a gun in my right, each braced against the other. I did live fire action simulators where I stormed through fake houses, pretending that I was the victim of a home invasion, shooting the shit out of a lot of paper targets. I learned how to discharge my firearm while kneeling. I learned how to shoot from a concealed holster. I learned that the way to put someone down, really, is to place two shots in their thoracic cavity and then, if they are still coming, send one coup de grace to a little box on the human ...

Basically, any trash that gets dumped in the water rides the currents to this one spot and joins an ever-increasing flotilla of crap. For all the breathless accounts of the mess and its impact on the area’s sealife, however, no one seemed to have a picture of the buildup. In order to sate our own curiosity, VBS joined the crew of a research vessel studying the trash and sailed out into one of the most remote spots of open water in the world, the North Pacific Gyre, in search of this mythical garbage island. What we discovered once we got there was an ecological disaster beyond any of our expectations and possibly the single worst thing human beings have done to the planet and ourselves. To see more, go to www.VBS.tv. Erik is all around the coolest person I have ever met. The way he looks, the way he skates, the way he pushes--he's just a straight-up cool man. I remember meeting him on the first Baker tour. Jay Strickland, Scotty Copalman, Trainwreck, Knox Godoy, as well as all the people that still skate for Baker were on that trip. It was a mess. It was like the heyday of the Pissdrunx. I couldn't sleep because we put 15 people in 3 hotel rooms and you never knew when Erik or Trainwreck were going to wake you up to fight you. It was really kind of scary. But anyway, as much of a pile that Erik seems like from a distance (or when he's drunk), he's actually a very smart and thoughtful person. In the end though, it all comes back to skateboarding, and Erik is first and foremost an incredible skateboarder, carving his own niche in a crowded world.

This facility allows human decomposition to be scientifically studied in a variety of different settings. I saw him and Daniel Castillo from across the Girl skatepark and was kinda fanning out in my head a little bit. Then Alex yells over, "Do an episode on Daewon!" and they all start laughing. I was sure they were making fun of me. But then Daewon flips the script and starts making fun of Alex like, "How are you gonna have an Epicly Later'd? So far it's been all established guys like Hosoi, Gonz, Dustin... dudes that have all paid their dues, and now you?" I couldn't believe that Daewon even watched the show. It was mind blowing.

There are rows of green tarps covering bulky heaps on the ground. Yellow plastic sashes with CRIME SCENE written on them in black cordon off little areas here and there. On closer inspection, human skulls and assorted other bones are found strewn among the leaves, and soon it becomes clear that there are swarms of maggots doing their job on the remains. The human remains. The Anthropology Research Facility—or the Body Farm, as it has been nicknamed, much to the chagrin of its employees—is dedicated to the study of the rate of human decomposition.
