But 20-year-old Alcala didnât have it all his own way in the final, having to fight back from a slow start to take home a last-minute victory over Goodall in front of a vocal Philippines crowd. Sitting in second with two minutes to go and with priority, Alcala jagged a set wave before weaving through the belly of a Cloud 9 cavern to jag a heat-winning 9.43 ride. THE world’s top 45 surfers have been issued a severe warning about what to expect for the 2008 Billabong Pro Tahiti with the world’s heaviest wave, Teahupoo, roaring to life on the opening day of the Air Tahiti Nui - Von Zipper Trials. The Trials event awards two wildcards into the Billabong Pro main event and pits 40 respected international big wave surfers against 40 Tahitian locals. The 2008 Trials event has attracted the cream of progressive big wave surfing talent with the likes of Jamie Sterling (Haw), Kalani Chapman (Haw), Jamie O’Brien (Haw), Cory Lopez (USA), Dylan Longbottom (AUS), Clay Marzo (Haw), Laurie Towner (AUS), Brian Conley (USA), and Anthony Walsh (AUS) making the field the strongest in its nine year history. A powerful WSW swell confronted contestants on day one, with a light offshore breeze fanning perfect 10-12ft (3-4m) sets with the occasional 15ft sneaker keeping contestants in round one and two on their toes. www.billabongpro.com
Best waves on tour in two years. Itâs a big call, but it came out of the lips of more than one tour surfer during the course of today. J-Bay turned on all time 4-6ft waves for round one of the Billabong Pro and you would be hard fought to wipe the smile off some of the competitors on day one. Taylor Knox went mad with a near perfect 19.70 score, Parko scored a 10 and lost, Taj pulled into two monster pipes on the one wave for a 9.93, Slater made it through easily and Fanning was in fine touch. But it is the giant Teahupoo, a huge left hand breaking wave specific to Tahiti, which every serious surfer wants to conquer - or at the very least see - and from 08-18 May, the Bilabong Pro Tahiti makes this possible for the best of the best. Eight-time world champion Kelly Slater (Coco Beach, USA) has trumped Australian Mick Fanning (Coolangatta, AUS) to win the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay for the fourth time. The 36-year-old Floridian was on fire as the Supertubes break turned on mind blowing 2.5m waves in early heats before deteriorating rapidly throughout the afternoon. Both surfers struggled in the opening stages of the 35-minute final, before Slater pounced on a clean inside wave to rack up an 8.50 score. A series of uncharacteristic falls by reigning world champ Fanning left the door wide open for Slater who capitalised with an 8.23 late in the match. His combined two wave total of 16.73 to Fanning's 9.40 was enough to clinch his fourth event victory for the year and extend his lead on the ASP World Tour Ratings.
Fall 2009 will see the premiere of a second Billabong/Metallica co-op design, the âDeath Magneticâ boardshort.
