Moroccan American Community celebrates Social Activist Aicha Chenna
Following Aicha Chenna's win of the Opus Prize this year. The Washington Moroccan Club, which in the midst of preparation for its upcoming 20th Anniversary festival, has organized a community event that hosted, thanked and celebrated Ms Ech Chenna's lifetime work and her recent recognition by the Opus Prize jury. Ms. Chenna encouraged the community to organize and become more active in support of the needy in Morocco. At her reading, organized by Algonquin Books, Washington Moroccan Club and Border Books, in Washington DC, Moroccan American Author, Laila Lalami, described the central character of her second novel in English, "Secret Son", as a poor young man in contemporary Morocco, his aspirations of education and escape from the Casablanca Slum where he lives with his mother, the revelation that his father is still alive and doing well and his sub-sequential adventures. Washington Athletic Club (WAC) won Washington International Soccer League's (WISL) Terrill cup for the second time with a decisive 4 - 0 win. WAC's supporters who managed to attend were indeed entertainment. The game overall was exciting and fun. First-half was even with very few chances created by both teams. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw. The second-half, however,was a complete different story; a halftime talk of the coaching staff with the players saw them morph into a more energized and organized side. During that half and with the continuous fans' support and chants, WAC began to slowly take control of the match. Moroccan Arts at The Arabesque Festival at the Kennedy Center
After three years preparation and a ten million dollars budge, the Kennedy center for the performing Arts, kicked started its Arabesque Festival; Arts of the Arab World. The opening was a grandiose and a colorful affair. Many members of the Moroccan American Community were present in force. The Kennedy center went out of its way to include the Moroccan American community, as well as other communities from the 22 countries featured in the festival, by including the “Washington Moroccan Club”, “friends of Morocco” among other community organizations that were active in helping to make the festival a success. At an event in Washington, Mr. Hisham Melhem, the Washington bureau chief for al-Arabiya TV, who scored the first television interview granted by President Barack Obama, Spoke to MoroccoBoard TV about what that interview means for future changes in the relations between America and the Arab/Muslim world. Moroccan Female Teen Soccer Players: Soccer Playing and Life Skills
Ten Moroccan girls and their two female coaches participated in a Sports Visitors program for the office of SportUnited, a program organized by US Dept of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The group spent twelve days in the U.S. improving their soccer skills, learning to be leaders, and meeting with their American contemporaries. Their fast paced program included five soccer clinics organized by U.S. Mens National Team coach Jay Miller and Washington Freedoms Clive Watson. Jay Miller and former Womens National Team Member, Lorrie Fair, served as Sports Envoys to Morocco last spring. Mr. Miller jumped at the chance to continue to work with the Moroccan girls. Barack Obama's inauguration, the Arab American Institute (AAI) organized a dinner/ show/ ball that was partly sponsored by the Moroccan American Center and drew a capacity crowd from around the country. In a unique and poignant ceremony, Jersey city Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy along with other city leaders and contingent from the Moroccan American Community, the Moroccan Flag was raised over City Hall. The Mayor designated Mr. Abdelali Lalaoui, a soccer coach and the event coordinator, as an Ambassador of Jersey city because of his outstanding role with the city's youth sport program.
