A fundraising at Morocco's ambassador's official residence fo Mr. salman Belayachi who is preparing a walk of a thousand miles, starting from Laayoun ending his walk in Tangier. Mr. Belayachi said that the purpose of the walk is to engage directly the citizens along his path and stressing the values of citizenship, active participation in the process of development, discarding negative feelings, regaining hope and taking responsability for one's faith. The fundraiser was heavily attended and donations were above what was expected by Mr Belayachi and his " Le citoyen Marocain" team that converged on the nation's capital from New York, Texas, Florida, Maryland and other states. Children with a personal connection to Morocco (children with Moroccan parents or grandparents, children who have visited or lived in Morocco ...etc) were invited to submit artwork on the theme âMy Moroccoâ. The Kids, ages 4 and 12, drew upon their personal experiences living in and visiting Morocco, or family stories or traditions that illustrated what Morocco means to them. The masterpieces were on display for the two judges, Mr. Hamid Kachmar, a Moroccan Artist teaching at Howard University and Ms. Mimi Wolford, of the Smithsonian Institute, who had the difficult task of choosing the top four winners. At her reading, organized by Algonquin Books, Washington Moroccan Club and Border Books, in Washington DC, Moroccan American Author, Laila Lalami, described the central character of her second novel in English, "Secret Son", as a poor young man in contemporary Morocco, his aspirations of education and escape from the Casablanca Slum where he lives with his mother, the revelation that his father is still alive and doing well and his sub-sequential adventures. In a lively Q&A session following her presentation, She refused to be seen as anything but a novelist, "I am not pretending to know my native country Morocco any more than anyone else". She said that she does not necessarily aim to do social criticism, or write about any particular issue, her main focus as a novelist, is to write a story as best I can. MoroccoBoard TV 's Town Hall Meeting between community members and the Moroccan American Coalition (MAC). The Town Hall meeting introduced the coalition to a larger audience, opened dialogue and doors of communication between MAC and the community. This was accomplished by providing MAC with a platform where it introduced and presented itself and its programs, and gave community members direct access to MAC for a direct conversation. The panel was comprised of two MAC representatives; Boubker Abisorour, MAC V.P. and Hassan Samrhouni, MAC Exec Board Member and two experienced community activists Latifa ElHadri and Hamid Mernissi. The questions received by email from the community were asked by the moderator, while the attendees had the floor open to ask their own. Topics discussed varied from discussing MACâs vision, to ways to entice community members to join, to acquiring about clauses in the bylaws, among others.
