  • NORFOLK (Sept. 30, 2009) After 39 years of faithful service, USS Nashville (LPD 13) was decommissioned during a ceremony Sept. 30 at Norfolk Naval Station on Pier 4 following more than 39 years of faithful service to the fleet. Decommissioning ceremonies mark the conclusion of a ship’s active service. During Nashville’s decommissioning ceremony, it lost its lifeblood when the crew disembarked, the watch was secured and the colors were struck for the last time. “It’s time for those of us who knew her to say goodbye,” said keynote speaker, retired Vice Adm.   • SIOCON BAY, Philippines (Sept. 6, 2009) Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines dispatched five boats and a civilian helicopter to assist the Philippine Navy in search and rescue efforts after a Superferry carrying nearly 1,000 people capsized and sank off the coast of Zamboanga del Norte. At the request of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, JSOTF-P sent two U.S. Navy Mark V Special Operations Craft, two 11-meter Rigid-Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) and a Maritime Support Vessel to assist Philippine Navy and Coast Guard rescue personnel. A civilian helicopter contracted by JSOTF-P also flew to the scene to provide search and rescue support from the air. Members of U.S. Naval Special Boat Team 12 and U.S. Navy SAR swimmers searched over 30 square miles for 11 hours, checking nearly 30 life rafts for survivors and scavenging relief supplies from the rafts to deliver to more than 100 survivors aboard a Philippine Navy vessel. The MSV crew provided 200 bottles of water for the U.S. teams to distribute with the relief supplies.   • 5th FLEET AOR (Aug. 26, 2009) Somali pirates aboard Motor Vessel (M/V) Win Far fire upon a U.S. Navy SH-60B Sea Hawk helicopter assigned to the Scorpions of Light Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HSL) 49. The helicopter, embarked with USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), was conducting a surveillance mission near the anchored M/V Win Far south of Garacad, Somalia. The video, from Forward Looking Infrared Radar (FLIR), shows the pirates firing a large caliber weapon at the helicopter. No rounds struck the Sea Hawk and no one was injured.   • PACIFIC OCEAN (June 22, 2009) Civil Service Mariner (CIVMAR) Andrew Strosahl, the cargo mate aboard USNS Richard E. Byrd (T-AKE 4), discusses his role aboard the Military Sealift Command dry cargo/ammunition ship. Strosahl is a CIVMAR with the rank of second mate. While others his age are just starting out in their careers, Strosahl, 25, is already well established in his field and in his role as the cargo mate aboard Military Sealift Command (MSC) dry cargo/ammunition ship. He happens to be one of the ship's more senior officers despite being one of the ship's youngest crew members. Richard E. Byrd is deployed as part of Pacific Partnership 2009, a humanitarian and civic assistance mission. As the enabling vessel, Richard E. Byrd will carry humanitarian civic assistance equipment and supplies and a multi-specialized team of preventive medicine personnel, veterinarians, a medical and dental team and multi-skilled engineering personnel to Kiribati, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Samoa and Tonga.
