more at http://www.theuptake.org Alabama is one of the states going to the polls tomorrow to pick a Presidential candidate. The UpTake’s Chuck Olsen is on his “Southern Fried Tour” and asks Birmingham-Southern College Political Science Professor Natalie Davis explains the big role race plays in Alabama politics, the support Obama and Clinton have among young voters, and the problems of media-based politics
If you consider yourself middle class, then you probably have a right to be upset about taxes. In Minnesota, when you include all local, state and federal taxes, you pay a higher proportion of your income in taxes than those who make more than $400,000 a year. And those who are poor pay a rate nearly twice as high as the rich. The culprits for this disparity: a decade of tax cuts for the rich based upon the false belief that they trickle down to the rest of the economy, and tax hikes on the middle class and poor in the form of property taxes, or disguised as fees. At a time when our economy, quality of life and infrastructure are declining, protesters and Republican Congressional Representatives are calling for even more tax cuts. Growth and Justice’s Angela Eilers says the protesters are a vocal minority who are putting “me” over “we.”

McCain's Yes, No, Maybe Your Daily Politics Video Blog: Behind the recent "100 years" brouhaha has been Sen. McCain's claim that we should be seeing our occupation of Iraq following the model of our long-term troop deployments in Germany, Japan and South Korea. But yesterday, the Huffington Post noted that McCain actually hasn't been consistent on this point either -- sometimes saying we need to leave soon and that Iraqis will never accept a permanent US presence and other times that he thinks they'll be fine with it and that he'd be happy staying for 100 or 1,000 years.
more: http://www.theuptake.org While chasing Senator Hillary Clinton through central Pennsylvania I tried to understand the motivations of those who are voting for her and those who are considering giving their support. The volatile polls in part belie a huge under swelling of weak support and undecided voters. Here are two men who are directly in the bullseye of the campaigns: white male undecided voters. Take a look at what they have to say.
The Democratic presidential candidates engaged in the first ever YouTube-fueled debate Monday night. Here's our highlight reel, in case you missed the action.
The Devil You Know Over the weekend President Pervez Musharraf declared a State of Emergency in Pakistan, instituting martial law, suspending the constitution, and firing the chief justice of the supreme court. Police have also begun rounding up scores of lawyers, judges, and activists, and the state has taken control of many of the private television stations and raided newspaper offices. This puts the Bush administration in a nearly impossible bind: oppose a Musharraf dictatorship or continue to support a leader who has been one of America's lone allies in the region in waging the war on terror. All this under the specter of a nuclear power teetering on the brink of failed statehood.

Resistance is futile! 2008 Democratic frontrunner Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) took the airwaves by force Sunday morning, flexing her political might with appearances on all five of the Sunday talk shows. And her dial was turned to 11 the entire time, flooding the zone with details of her recently unveiled healthcare proposal, denunciations of the Bush approach to Iraq, and a deafening drumbeat of determination to become the next President of the United States.
Stupidest Guy on Earth Speaks Out Your Daily Politics Video Blog: The President bears the greatest responsibility for the catastrophe of the Iraq war. He was the key decision maker at every point. And he's fundamentally accountable. But if you look into the innards of the process that led to war there is probably no one who was either responsible for or involved with more of the bad decisions, more of the conscious decisions or horrible ideas than Doug Feith. You'd think someone like that would be keeping a low profile. But in fact he's got a new book out explaining how Iraq was a great idea, how nothing was his fault and sticking it to his enemies. Trainwreck is an overused term, but in today's episode of TPMtv we look at some choice moments from Feith's book release media tour where he explains how you've got the whole thing all wrong.
