  • More at http://www.theuptake.org It's the longest election in Minnesota's history, and it's still not over. But a ruling from Minnesota's election contest court may have signaled the beginning of the end of Minnesota's US Senate race. Former Senator Norm Coleman's chances of winning the election were severely dimmed when the court ruled that only 400 additional ballots will be counted. Democrat Al Franken leads Coleman by 225 votes. The election contest has been a soap opera, drawing thousands of viewers from all over the country every day. In the above video, The UpTake's Mike McIntee takes us through the major plot lines and moments of the trial, which has been educational as well as entertaining.

  • On Monday we sat down (virtually) with the New York Times oped page's Paul Krugman to talk about his new book, The Conscience of a Liberal, what it's like being 'radicalized' by the Bush administration and what he thinks the "big stand up and cheer moment" of the 2008 campaign has been so far.

  • More at http://www.theuptake.org. Why did the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office raid a quiet musical performance at a rented theater and then search everyone? It's the eve of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, and that has everything to do with it. Noah Kunin takes us inside the building that the police raided Friday night and shows us what they did, or didn't find. This was streamed live from a cell phone camera, hence the video quality.

  • By Noah Kunin, Senior Political Correspondent 6/30/09 In a midday ruling, the Minnesota Supreme Court rejected Former Senator Norm Coleman's appeal to overturn the decision by the three judge Election Contest trial court that Al Franken won the the 2008 Senate Election in Minnesota. Coleman, in a humble concession speech, (which The UpTake was not allowed to film) said the process has gone far enough. This video is Senator-Elect Al Franken's response, from his home in Minneapolis, MN. While Senator-Elect Franken will be the 60th Democrat in the US Senate, he says it's more important that he will be the "2nd Senator from Minnesota". He is expected to be sworn in next week.

  • Former US Senator Norm Coleman's lawyers announced today that he has filed an appeal with the Minnesota Supreme Court to overturn a lower court ruling that said Democrat Al Franken won the state's US Senate election. This is a press conference phone call with Coleman spokesperson lawyer Ben Ginsberg and Coleman attorney Jim Langdon. For some reason, Ginsberg did not want to reveal where he was making the call from-- saying it was only "secret and undisclosed".

  • Recently TPMtv connected with Juan Cole, professor of modern Middle Eastern and South Asian history at the University of Michigan, and writer of the blog Informed Comment and the new book Napoleon's Egypt. We asked Juan about what's really going on in al Anbar province (which the administration persistently cites as a glimmering example of the success of the surge), whether the Sunnis are ready to concede national reconciliation, and what might happen if and when we ever leave Iraq.

  • More at http://www.theuptake.org US Senate candidate Al Franken was loose and making jokes as his legal team prepared for Monday's election contest trial that could determine who is Minnesota's next US Senator. After a state-wide hand recount, Franken holds a 225-vote lead over former US Senator Norm Coleman. Coleman is taking the election to court claiming irregularities on how some of the votes were counted and handled. You can watch that trial live on The UpTake http://www.theuptake.org starting Monday at 1pm CT/ 2pm ET/ Noon MT/ 11am PT. Known initially as a comedian, Franken solidified his seriousness about politics while hosting a radio show on Air America. Saturday he recalled those days while speaking at a party thrown by the Minnesota Air America affiliate AM 950, KTNF "The Voice of Minnesota". While he joked he has "lost his sense of humor", Franken showed that he still has his comic chops and used them to make points about the right wing, the recount and the future of America. • Tomorrow night the Republican presidential candidates will debate in Dearborn, Michigan - the first debate of the full Fred-Thompson-included GOP field. With Thompson's feeble performance on the campaign trail thus far, Rudy Giuliani's fundamental obstacles in winning over the religious right wing of the party, and Mitt Romney's, well, chronic Mitt Romneyism, we thought we'd check the enthusiasm temperature of the Republican party. Catch the GOP '08 fever!!!
