  • Smart kids won't be the only ones heading back to school with the newest gadgets this fall. Some of the country's biggest school bus companies are also loading their fleets with the latest high-tech safety tools. Nearly 22,000 school buses will be equipped with an array of sophisticated security technology — including Global Positioning Systems (GPS) enabling dispatchers to track the speed and exact location of any bus at anytime. The buses will also be equipped with sensitive alarms that can detect if any children have been left onboard, or if an intruder enters, after a bus is parked. An electronic hand-held device will make daily pre-trip inspections easier, allowing bus drivers to be more thorough when checking and recording tire pressure, brake lights, and emergency exits before they leave the bus yard each morning to pick up students. Produced for First Student, Inc.

  • August 2007 -- According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the average worker at a meatpacking plant earns 35 percent less an hour than they did 30 years ago. And some labor experts say immigration is a factor in these declining wages. "Wage depression" is a term being used to describe the effect of companies artificially keeping wages down by employing illegal immigrants willing to work for a lower wage. In a federal lawsuit in Cactus, Texas, former American workers accused a Swift meatpacking plant of doing just that. The workers claim their loss of income and declining standard of living is a direct result of the plant's illegal hiring practices. The owner of the country's second largest meatpacking plant, has stated the accusations to be false. Last year, federal immigration agents raided several plants across the country, arresting more than a thousand illegal immigrants. Produced for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR)

  • Racing may be a sport where the drivers are sitting while performing, but to be competitive their conditioning has to be as intense as any professional athlete. And hitting the gym is not always enough. Drivers need to be mentally tough as well physically fit, so many look to other sports to train their bodies and toughen their minds. Oliver Gavin is a four-time GT class champion at the 24-hour of LeMans. To stay in shape he runs marathons. Johnny O'Connell is the record holder for most Top-5 finishes on the American LeMans Series, he trains in Karate to give him an edge the racetrack. Martial Arts, like Motor Racing, is a very discipline sport and you have to be calculating, intelligent and quick. Being physically fit helps drivers be more competitive on the track. • If you're one of the millions headed for some exercise at an indoor pool this winter, the experts say there are a few things you should keep in mind. If you smell traces of chlorine, or if your eyes begin to burn, you may want to skip that morning swim. That so-called "chlorine smell" often associated with indoor pools is actually the result of chloramines, a build-up of irritants in the water and air. These irritants can cause everything from itchy eyes, to wheezing, and even asthma. The good news? New technology is helping to eliminate these threats. Ultraviolet light not only helps to disinfect water and kill bacteria, it also helps to destroy potentially harmful chloramines. Likewise, automated monitoring systems from companies like Siemens can keep tabs on ph levels and provide a demand-based chlorine feed. Produced for Siemens

  • Did you buy a house or refinance your mortgage last year? If so, you may qualify for a new deduction. Homeowners may be able to deduct mortgage insurance premiums, also known as PMI, that they paid for the year on mortgages taken out or refinanced in 2007 or after. Generally, you pay PMI if you put less than 20 percent down on your home. The PMI deduction is available if you itemize your deductions on your tax return. The amount of mortgage insurance premiums you paid last year is typically shown in Box 4 of Form 1098. Homeowners with adjusted gross income of less than $100,000, and who itemize their deductions, can reap the entire benefit of this deduction -- meaning they can deduct all the PMI they paid for the year. • If you provided support last year for a child in your household who is unrelated to you, you may be able to claim a deduction for that child due to new rules for dependents. The IRS recently clarified the tax laws relating to qualifying dependents. This clarification means that if you live with and support your significant other’s child, you can claim that child as your dependent. The child does not have to be a blood relative or related by marriage to be claimed as a dependent. This change is retroactive to all tax years beginning after December 31, 2004, which means you can amend your tax returns from those years to receive this benefit. If you are eligible to claim an unrelated child as a dependent, you can also claim any eligible day care expenses for the Child and Dependent Care Credit. •No utilizar almohadas, peluches, sabanas. •No colocar cuna cerca de ventanas cuyas cortinas tengan cordones. •Si usa una cuna de segunda mano, asegúrese que no le falten piezas y que espacio entre las barras no sea mayor a dos pulgadas. • Car crashes are the leading cause of death among children ages three to 14, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Half of the children who die in crashes are completely unrestrained. Safe Kids Buckle Up, the child passenger safety program of Safe Kids USA, provides child seat inspection and hands-on training for parents and caregivers across the country. Hitting a major milestone this year, the millionth seat was checked in Los Angeles, coinciding with car seat checkups around the country. Safe Kids has state and local coalitions and chapters across the country and has distributed approximately 365,000 seats to families in need. Since the first seat was checked over a decade ago, statistics from the NHTSA show a 25 percent drop in fatalities for children under the age of five, saving the lives of 3,800 children. • New System Gives Drivers More Bang for their Buck Drivers struggling with high gas prices may have another option next time they hit the road: a new system that can turn a vehicle into a hydrogen hybrid which dramatically boosts a vehicles' gas mileage. The cars are modified with a unique fuel cell system - a computer that communicates with the car's computer - to harness the power of hydrogen. By using electricity from the battery, the fuel cell separates water into oxygen and hydrogen and blends the hydrogen with the fuel. This adds power to the fuel so each gallon of gas does more work and lasts longer. On a 3000 mile cross country test drive, a car equipped with the hydrogen hybrid system averaged 55 miles to the gallon. After two years of research and development, Pro Motors Group has partnered with 4 Wheel Parts to offer nationwide installation of hydrogen hybrid system. To date, about 250 to 300 cars have been converted. Produced for Pro Motors Group Corp.

  • New York, NY - With many American families closely watching their household budgets, a new spring wardrobe is no longer a given. According to the Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle MonitorTM survey, 64% of respondents noted that they have less this year to spend on clothing than last. "With consumers spending less money this year on new clothing, it's become even more important to pay special attention to treating stains properly, so we can get the most out of our current cotton wardrobe," says Norma Keyes, Director of Product Standards, Cotton Incorporated. "With proper stain treatment, it's possible to remove those stains and avoid throwing the garment away and buying a replacement, which means you can purchase new cotton basics for the spring and summer instead." Removing stains effectively remains a challenge for many, and with potentially expensive results; according to Monitor data, 31% of respondents reported throwing a garment away if they cannot remove a stain after two attempts.
