It is estimated electrical problems cause more than 40 thousand fires a year, kill close to 500 Americans and injure 23-hundred more, according to the US Fire Administration. That’s the bad news. The good news- many of these fires are preventable, especially thanks to new technologies. Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) have been used for years to help detect what’s known as “parallel” types of arcing, believed to cause many electrical fires. Now, new “combination type AFCIs” take this prevention a step further, by detecting parallel types of arcing as well as series, or load limited, arcing. Beginning in 2008, the 2005 National Electrical code mandates combination type AFCIs in new residential construction. Experts say it makes sense not just to install the new combination type AFCIs in new homes, but in older homes as well, saying this inexpensive device can go along way towards saving both property and lives. December 2007 -- With the help of "Access Hollywood" correspondent Maria Menounos, an excited crowd of intrepid coffee drinkers enjoyed the first-ever "Dunkin' Donuts Shopping Cart Derby" Saturday, December 8, at the Santa Monica Pier in California. The lively event raised funds for America's Second Harvest -- The Nation's Food Bank Network, and celebrated the launch of Dunkin' Donuts packaged coffee in retail outlets across the country. Over 30 teams participated in the competitive obstacle course for the chance to win a two-year, one-year or six-month's supply of their preferred brew. Each team that participated generated a donation to America's Second Harvest by P&G Coffee. The result was a total donation of $20,000 to the non-profit that feeds America's hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks. Land Rover has revealed an exciting vision of its future with the LRX concept at the Detroit Motor Show.The three-door LRX is more compact, lighter and features sustainable technology. It addresses the needs of a changing world and offers the potential of 120 g/km CO2 emissions. Shorter than the Freelander 2 / LR2 and 205 mm (8.1 in) lower, the LRX is conceived as using a 2.0-litre, turbodiesel hybrid, capable of running on bio-diesel. Combined with other technologies, this powertrain could reduce fuel consumption by as much as 30% compared with other comparable 4x4s. The concept's integrated Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) would allow LRX to use electric drive alone at lower speeds while retaining full and even improved 4x4 ability in tough conditions. Everyone knows you need to change your carsâ oil every 3,000 miles, right? Well, maybe not. The traditional oil change recommendation was based on decades-old engine and oil technologies. Todayâs engines are built using advanced technology, reducing or eliminating contaminants and increasing the recommended time between oil changes. New in-vehicle technologies, like GM Oil Life System, can reduce the frequency between oil changes by calculating each engineâs oil âlife.â The system is a sophisticated technology that determines the optimum oil change interval for each vehicle, based upon how individual drivers have used it. The Volt Electric Car Showcased at GM's 100th Anniversary
Since its founding in 1908, General Motors has built over 450 million vehicles and currently manufactures cars in 35 different countries. To mark their 100th birthday, they rolled out what they are calling the "reinvention" of the automobile - the all-electric drive Chevrolet Volt. The day kicked off with a live global broadcast in Detroit, where the production model of the Chevrolet Volt was revealed. The revolutionary extended-range electric vehicle will deliver up to 40 miles per gallon of gasoline and emissions-free driving for hundreds of additional miles. During the last century, GM has been responsible for many innovations that have helped shape personal transportation - like the electric self-starter, the fully automatic transmission and shatter-proof safety glass. Select Group Test-Drives Latest in Volt Technology One of the most anticipated vehicles of this generation is one step closer to hitting the market. The technology behind the Chevrolet Volt, likely to be the first mass-produced electric car, was recently test-driven by a select group of leading journalists. Since electric cars can be noticeably different, the goal was to make the driving experience the same as conventional gas powered vehicles and not feel like a science project.
