Smart School Buses Load Up with Hi-Tech Safety Equipment
Smart kids won't be the only ones heading back to school with the newest gadgets this fall. Some of the country's biggest school bus companies are also loading their fleets with the latest high-tech safety tools. Nearly 22,000 school buses will be equipped with an array of sophisticated security technology — including Global Positioning Systems (GPS) enabling dispatchers to track the speed and exact location of any bus at anytime. The buses will also be equipped with sensitive alarms that can detect if any children have been left onboard, or if an intruder enters, after a bus is parked. An electronic hand-held device will make daily pre-trip inspections easier, allowing bus drivers to be more thorough when checking and recording tire pressure, brake lights, and emergency exits before they leave the bus yard each morning to pick up students. August 2007 -- According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the average worker at a meatpacking plant earns 35 percent less an hour than they did 30 years ago. And some labor experts say immigration is a factor in these declining wages. "Wage depression" is a term being used to describe the effect of companies artificially keeping wages down by employing illegal immigrants willing to work for a lower wage. In a federal lawsuit in Cactus, Texas, former American workers accused a Swift meatpacking plant of doing just that. The workers claim their loss of income and declining standard of living is a direct result of the plant's illegal hiring practices. The owner of the country's second largest meatpacking plant, has stated the accusations to be false. Did you buy a house or refinance your mortgage last year? If so, you may qualify for a new deduction. Homeowners may be able to deduct mortgage insurance premiums, also known as PMI, that they paid for the year on mortgages taken out or refinanced in 2007 or after. Generally, you pay PMI if you put less than 20 percent down on your home. The PMI deduction is available if you itemize your deductions on your tax return. The amount of mortgage insurance premiums you paid last year is typically shown in Box 4 of Form 1098. Homeowners with adjusted gross income of less than $100,000, and who itemize their deductions, can reap the entire benefit of this deduction -- meaning they can deduct all the PMI they paid for the year. If you provided support last year for a child in your household who is unrelated to you, you may be able to claim a deduction for that child due to new rules for dependents. The IRS recently clarified the tax laws relating to qualifying dependents. This clarification means that if you live with and support your significant other’s child, you can claim that child as your dependent. The child does not have to be a blood relative or related by marriage to be claimed as a dependent. This change is retroactive to all tax years beginning after December 31, 2004, which means you can amend your tax returns from those years to receive this benefit. Car crashes are the leading cause of death among children ages three to 14, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Half of the children who die in crashes are completely unrestrained. Safe Kids Buckle Up, the child passenger safety program of Safe Kids USA, provides child seat inspection and hands-on training for parents and caregivers across the country. Hitting a major milestone this year, the millionth seat was checked in Los Angeles, coinciding with car seat checkups around the country. Safe Kids has state and local coalitions and chapters across the country and has distributed approximately 365,000 seats to families in need. Since the first seat was checked over a decade ago, statistics from the NHTSA show a 25 percent drop in fatalities for children under the age of five, saving the lives of 3,800 children.
