Garden Giants (King Stropharia) are edible mushrooms and Maria planted our crop at the Vancouver Compost Garden this past spring. We see them emerge under the squash leaves in September and admire their beauty.

We planted wasabi seven or eight years ago at City Farmer and finally we are giving it the taste trial.
Ian Lai, a chef and urban agriculture consultant, has been teaching children how to make bread. But what is so unusual and especially in a city, is that all the grains used to make the bread are grown in the city. Wheat, barley, spelt, flax, buckwheat, amaranth, and keenwa are grown at the Terra Nova Garden site in Richmond. Young students learn to winnow, crush, and grind the wheat to make their own loaves of bread. The other grains are added to the loaf to create a "multigrain' loaf. www.cityfarmer.info
Perhaps the weirdest Victory Garden video ever. 1943 Dig For Victory Leaflet No 1 The video advocates preparing your garden so that you can have crops to harvest for winter storage. In Vancouver, we plan early to make sure we have crops in the garden for winter picking (kale, Swiss chard), for harvesting out of the cold frame (variety of hardy salad greens) and for early spring harvest (Purple sprouting broccoli). Mike Dialogue from the video. "In spring this gardener sowed away He meant to eat well every day." www.cityfarmer.info

Sharon picks fresh vegetables at the Vancouver Compost Demonstration Garden. It's summer, August 21, and this is food grown in the city just feet from the backdoor. That's what urban agriculture is all about. http://www.cityfarmer.info/
Tasha talks to Mike about natural lawn care at City Farmer. A push mower makes no noise, uses no gasoline and does not pollute the atmosphere. See what else you can do to be a 'green' lawnranger.
Simon is a young man who makes things happen. For the last few years he’s run a summer camp for kids who want to learn about food, farms and science. “FarmWonders is a student-run community education initiative committed to promoting environmental awareness through science-based farm learning. We aim to offer a unique experience that allows children to explore the wonders of science at the farm and discover the mysteries of the food that they eat.” City Farmer
I catch up with Sarah and Niki at UBC Farm where they are both hard at work harvesting and selling produce grown as part of a unique education program. If they have dirt on their hands and faces it's because this is a real hands-on program, not simply another in-the-classroom academic course. (And I apologize to them for shooting them before they could wash up!)
From April of 2007 until August of 2008, we've been waiting for a big harvest of mushrooms. Maria shows off our Shiitake Mushrooms.

Heather Gorringe, founder of Wiggly Wigglers, is a well-know British blogger who visited us today to learn how we use the Web to further our urban agriculture work. She, son Monty and farmer husband Phil who farms 1200 acres, arable and beef, were as surprised as we were to be serenaded by the Regal Trio who came by to shoot some photos. They played “Norwegian Wood” by the Beatles for our guests. City Farmer.
Terry and Beverly tell us about a wonderful City of Vancouver program that makes our city more beautiful. “Green Streets gardens are landscaped traffic circles and corner bulges in neighbourhoods.” Volunteer gardeners plant and care for award-winning gardens in over 250 sites. City Farmer TV.
