  • In this important lecture delivered at the University of Massachusetts, Said takes aim at one of the central tenets of recent foreign policy thinking-- that conflicts between different and "clashing civilizations" (Western, Islamic, Confucian) characterize the contemporary world. "The real question is whether in the end we want to work for civilizations that are separate, or whether we should be taking the more integrative, but perhaps more difficult path, which is to see them as making one vast whole, whose exact contours are impossible for any person to grasp, but whose certain existence we can intuit and feel and study." -Edward Said

  • Richard Gizbert investigates the media coverage of Iran and the British soldiers' stories, and the divide between East and West. In his Listening Post programme, Gizbert also looks at the modern-era war of information through control of search engines such as Google. With ever-increasing importance to the process of relaying information in today's world, Listening Post also documents the case of an amatuer journalist caught up in the workings of the system.

  • Last Summer's War on Lebanon had White House script writers' frantically in search for a catch phrase to justify Israeli barbarism against the Lebanese. In an equal declarative expression of madness, Secretary of State Ms. Condoleezza Rice described the aggressions against Lebanon as the 'birth pangs of a New Middle East' -- a New Middle East marked by sectarian strife, rivers of blood and the cries of innocent children.

  • One of the most famous sermons delivered in the history of Islam in which the grand daughter of the Holy Prophet (s) is brought to face the tyrant Caliph of the time, Yazid, as a captive and prisoner of war. Following the massacre of Imam Hussain (a), his family and companions at Karbala, Yazid went on to parade the family of the Holy Prophet (s) through the various Islamic cities culminating at the center of his power, Damascus. In these extremely hostile conditions, Lady Zaynab delivered a most eloquent sermon with the courage and poise of her father and grandfather in which she spoke to Yazeed with unwavering truth of his vile nature and the efforts of his ancestors that always aimed to extinguish the light of Islam since its dawn. She then magnificiently concludes - after having seen her own family massacred and mutilated - by establishing the blessed end that awaits the patient and virtuous ones.

  • Azmi Bishara is a Christian Arab human rights activist and Israeli citizen from Nazareth; the founder of the Arab Students Union in Israel and the National Democratic Assembly (Balad); former Head of the Philosophy Department, Bir Zeit University; and a senior researcher in the Van Leer Institute, Jerusalem. In this talk Dr. Bishara discusses the radical change from a unipolar world, since the fall of the Soviet Union, to unilateralism and what this means in the context of international relations. Bishara seeks to highlight this shift by drawing on methods and justifications used prior to the the war on Iraq. He also investigates the dawning reality of 'global terrorism' and how this has influenced this shift. He dedicates a large part of the talk however, to the Arab-Israeli conflict and the pivotal role that US foreign policy has in settling this age-long 'conflict'.

  • In July 2006, Israel, urged on by the US, attacked Lebanon in an attempt to destroy Hezbollah and uproot their popularity amongst the Lebanese by the systematic targetting of civilians and civilin infrastructure. Israeli warplanes pounded Lebanon from the air, dropping 5,000 bombs a day for 33 days, culminating in the raining down of 4 million cluster bomblets over Southern Lebanon in the last three days of the war. 130,000 homes were destroyed and over 1 million refugees created, but Israeli ground troops took heavy casualties and were unable to reach the Litani River.

  • Calling the Quran amazing is not something done only by Muslims, who have an appreciation for the book and who are pleased with it; it has been labeled amazing by non-Muslims as well. In fact, even people who hate Islam very much have still called it amazing. One thing which surprises non-Muslims who are examining the book very closely is that the Quran does not appear to them to be what they expected. What they assume is that they have an old book which came fourteen centuries ago from the Arabian desert; and they expect that the book should look something like that - an old book from the desert.

  • Short film documenting the lethal effects of the use of cluster munitions worldwide, with commentary, new statistics and analysis from military experts at Human Rights Watch. Footage shows how cluster munitions have endangered civilian populations from the Vietnam era through current conflicts in Iraq and Lebanon. During the last THREE DAYS of the War on Lebanon, Israel fired up to 4,000,000 cluster bomblets according to UN estimates - twice the amount used by the US in the attack on Iraq in 2003. Up to 1 million of these bomblets remain unexploded today, scattered all over southern Lebanon endangering the lives of children and innocent civilians.
