Corrosive decomposition of nitrates is a well-known chemical process. When the affected chemical is silver nitrate fixed to ribbons of cellulose (i.e. film), the reaction's end result is a total loss of the images on a reel. Classic films in archives and libraries around the world have been irreparably damaged by a blight previously unrecognized by the owners and caretakers . The only positive aspect of cinematography's deadly disease is the spontaneous and beautiful alteration of man-made photographic images by the surreal intrusions and s of chaos and decay . It's difficult to believe that all the footage for this feature was simply picked by the director out of the most interesting sequences found during research of the subject. Decasia-a state of decay.
