THE world’s top 45 surfers have been issued a severe warning about what to expect for the 2008 Billabong Pro Tahiti with the world’s heaviest wave, Teahupoo, roaring to life on the opening day of the Air Tahiti Nui - Von Zipper Trials. The Trials event awards two wildcards into the Billabong Pro main event and pits 40 respected international big wave surfers against 40 Tahitian locals. The 2008 Trials event has attracted the cream of progressive big wave surfing talent with the likes of Jamie Sterling (Haw), Kalani Chapman (Haw), Jamie O’Brien (Haw), Cory Lopez (USA), Dylan Longbottom (AUS), Clay Marzo (Haw), Laurie Towner (AUS), Brian Conley (USA), and Anthony Walsh (AUS) making the field the strongest in its nine year history. Teahupoo, Tahiti (Monday 28th April 2008): HAWAIIAN hot-shot JAMIE O’BRIEN has defeated a class field of over 80 big wave surfers to win the Air Tahiti Nui – VonZipper Trials in Tahiti. In heavy 3m surf, the 2006 Pipeline Masters Champion defeated talented Brazilian Bruno Santos in an epic final. The pair trade 8 and 9 point rides before O’Brien snatched victory in the last 40-seconds with a perfect ten. Both surfers have won coveted wildcards into the Billabong Pro Tahiti main event which gets underway on May 8th.
After four days without waves, the famed right hand point break of Jeffreys Bay in South Africa has roared back to life for rounds three and four of the Billabong Pro world tour surfing event. Top seeded surfers were in devastating form as Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow, Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson all progressed through. J-Bay turned on all time 4-6ft waves for round one of the Billabong Pro and you would be hard fought to wipe the smile off some of the competitors on day one. History was created in the girls division as Pauline Ado (FRA) became the first international competitor to win the event; an event that had previously been dominated by Australian athletes. With a combined heat score of 13.43 (out of a possible 20) Ado proved to be too strong for runner-up Bethany Hamilton (HAW) in a battle that went down to the wire.

2008 Billabong World Junior Championships - Day 1 Highlights
Day one of the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships saw a melting pot of talent, from the eight ASP world regions (Europe, South Africa, South America, North America, Hawaii, Australasia, Asia - plus ASP International region), descend on North Narrabeen. And what resulted was surfing of the highest order - with big scores, upsets and scintillating performances from the world’s best.

Aritz Aranburu (EUK), 23, current ASP World No. 39, caused the upset of the event, eliminating reigning nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 37, in Round 2 of the Billabong Pro Tahiti. For Aranburu, it would mark his first heat win of the 2009 ASP World Tour season the young Basque surfer putting up an impressive 17.27 heat total to Slaterâs 15.00.

The worldâs top 45 ranked professional surfers will be heading for the renowned waves of Jeffreys Bay in July for the 24th edition of the Billabong Pro, Stop No.5 of 10 on the 2009 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour and the first South African surfing event to make a concerted effort to reduce its impact on climate change.

Day two of the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships saw the best female talent from the eight ASP world regions (Europe, South Africa, South America, North America, Hawaii, Australasia, Asia - plus ASP International region), take apart the shifting peaks of North Narrabeen. With the likes of Paige Hareb (NZL) and Arini Mason on song, Laura Enever (North Narrabeen, NSW) was the lone Australian remaining by days end. Great performances from Bethany Hamiliton (HAW), Courtney Conlogue (USA) and Alizee Arnaud (FRA) also rounded out an excellent day of surfing.
