On my trip to Israel with a group of Silicon Valley bloggers last year, I broke away from the pack and spent an afternoon driving through the occupied West Bank, from Jerusalem, past Bethlehem, through the settlement of Kiriath Arba and into the ancient city of Hebron, where Jews and Muslims both revere the resting place of Biblical figures Abraham and Sarah. Mikhael Manekin of Breaking the Silence, a remarkable human rights organization founded by veterans of the Israeli military, served as a lieutenant in the Golani Brigade during the second intifada. On a still, languid afternoon, Manekin, 28, gave me a tour of life on the ground for Palestinians in the West Bank, such as the requirement to take a 20-kilometer detour rather than crossing an Israeli street, or the restrictions that prevent residents of Hebron from exiting through the front doors of their own homes. (The Israeli military prevents Western journalists from entering Gaza, but comparable restrictions exist for Palestinian residents of Gaza.)

Intel's chairman on corporate social responsibility
Perhaps the highlight of this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas for me was the sitdown we had with Intel chairman and former CEO Craig Barrett. At CES the next day, Barrett gave a keynote in which he announced a wide-ranging new initiative by Intel to support the philanthropic micro-lending efforts of Kiva.org and the nonprofit charity SavetheChildren.org all across the globe. In the wake of the global financial crisis, Intel has been steadily reaching out across the U.S. border to advance education and literacy around the world. Barrett mentions the Intel Teach program to put technology in the classroom, which is especially popular overseas. He also discusses the larger role that technology companies â Intel, Microsoft, Cisco, IBM (and Google, though he doesnât name them) â are playing in the evolving field of corporate social responsibility. Two quick quotes from Barrett: ⢠}Technology is not the answer. Technology is one of the tools you can use. The really important thing in education is that you have good teachers." Without quality teachers, all the technology in the world wonât help. ⢠He told a story about schoolchildren in a rural village in India whose highlight of the week comes on Tuesdays, when a bus carrying a mobile computer station arrives. Itâs had a significant impact on reducing truancy and dropout rates in rural India. "When you see that, you say, Wow." A week after we met with Barrett, he announced that he will step down in May â after 35 years with the company, 7 of them as the CEO and almost 4 as chair.
