The former light rail track has been under reconstruction for years. It will be a four-lane road that connects Tobata (Wakato) Ferry and Kokura Central, Kitakyûsyû (Kitakyushu) . The works might be completed in 2012.
Enter Wakamatu district through Wakato Bridge, that spans Dôkaiwan Bay. Then drive around the town. Wakamatu was the Japan's largest coal port before WWII. But all coalfields nearby had been closed until 1976 and the port lost its grounds. Wakamatu is now a part of Kitakyûsyû (Kitakyushu) City.
