The Big Ball is illuminated by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs (light emitting diodes). There are 8,064 of each color - red, blue, green and white. The Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs are integrated within 672 lighting modules developed by Lighting Science Group exclusively for the Big Ball.

The confetti that is used during the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration is given a flight test from four stories up. Many of the pieces of confetti that will descend upon millions of revelers will have written on them individual wishes from people all over the world. The personalized confetti is pinned to the 3 Musketeers Wishing Wall and can be viewed in the Times Square Information Center until December 31st 2008.

The gigantic 500-pound brand-new seven-foot-tall numeral "9" that will complete the "2-0-0-9" sign atop One Times Square was brought to Manhattan by ferry boat. The four numerals use a total of 608 40-watt Philips Halogena Energy Saver Light Bulbs. Workers from Landmark Signs installed the 2-0-0-9 numerals.
The Times Square 2009 New Year's Eve Ball is bigger than ever and features 2,668 Waterford Crystal triangles. The theme this year is "Let There Be Joy" and the crystals depict an angel with arms uplifted, welcoming a fresh start that the new year signifies, where joy surrounds us all. The crystals are custom built to withstand high winds, precipitation and temperature extremes as the Ball will soon be on display year round atop One Times Square.

The highlight of New Year's Eve in Times Square has to be the midnight kiss, as the Big Ball drops and the 2-0-0-9 numerals light up high atop One Times Square. 50 couples turned up in Times Square to practice smooching with their loved one and to get some tips from a kissing expert and Nivea Lip Care.
As part of the New Year's Eve preparations the public is invited to shred their bad memories in Times Square - everything from worthless stock certificates and depressing bank statements to photos of old lovers. Passersby also write their bad memories on stationery and watch those awful recollections get sliced into shreds. This year a knee x-ray and its associated pain is brought to a fitting end and the Times Square Alliance provides a sledge hammer to take care of the bulkier items which includes a DVD player.
