Title: Dance of Yi. Composer: Huiran Wang. Performance Date: 02/18/2007 Place: Egg Theater (Albany, NY) Purpose: Chinese New Year Celebration The instrument I am playing here is called a Pipa. It is a string instrument of Central Asian origin brought to China along the Silk Road about 2,000 years ago. It became popular at the court of the Tang dynasty in the 7th century, and is now an integral part of Chinese musical culture. From China, it reached many other East Asian cultures and versions of the Pipa exist in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. It is a difficult instrument to master. The four strings are played using a fake fingernail, because the strings are too hard to use real nails. This song is called Dance of the Yi People. The Yi, formerly also called the LoLo, are a large tribe of about 8 million people living in the mountain areas of Southwest China, with some in the mountains of Northeast Vietnam and Northern Thailand. Most are mountain farmers and herdsmen. Their language is related to Burman. This dance is about love and courtship, and though based on traditional Yi music, this Pipa solo piece was created by composer Wang Huiran in 1960. It is today part of the standard Pipa repertoire, and most students of the Pipa will have learned it.

迴梦游仙 + 仙剑问情 - Silver Mercury (Original: Chinese Paladin 4) [Guitar Instrumental]
From the widely-popular game "Chinese Paladin 4". This is a very ancient, traditional Chinese styled song. My challenge in this song was to blend the traditional Chinese style with Alternative Rock (the mellow type) maintaining the beauty and the style. This attempt was influenced by Chinese artists such as Jay Chou, and Lee Hom Wang whom has integrated Modern aged R&B and Pop with Traditional Chinese style. For the beginning of 仙剑问情(The Immortal Sword's Sentimental Question), I used an acoustic guitar to give it the old styled flavor into it. Later, I used distortion with legato to add beauty into the song. I was originally going to use my Xiao (Traditional Chinese Instrument) to take the place of the acoustic guitar. Sadly, I could not because #1 It's tuned to the key of F which is not the key of this song, and my Xiao cannot play other keys without sounding unnatural or off tune because let's face it, it has been in my family for decades. Some of you might question my way of holding the guitar in the beginning. Long story short, I have had a few years of experience with the erhu (Traditional Chinese Instrument). I hold my guitar like a erhu so that I can vibrate the strings just like an erhu making the sound a little similar and give it a more traditional Chinese feel.
