Your relative happiness is the real gaugue of your spiritual progress. The first steps to perfect happiness are to recognize the unhappiness we presently live with and have become inured to. And when we begin to see the results of even a little practice, we get some faith and are willing to work hard for our spiritual goals.
For most of us most of the time, things are actually alright. So why aren't we content with the present? Instead, we are spending an inordinate amount of time worrying about the imaginary future or cultivating resentment about a past which is done and over.
