Miss Teen USA was started in 1983 as a spin off of the Miss USA Pageant for teenagers. The little sister pageant became an instant hit with it's first winner, Ruth Zakarian of New York. In its early years, winners of the Miss Teen USA Pageant could compete in the Miss USA Pageant of that same year if they met the age eligibility requirements. However, after only 5 years, they've abandoned that idea therefore the winners of the Miss Teen USA Pageant have to compete all over again in the state level.
