After classic comedy shorts and fgeature films for Hal Roach, Laurel and Hardy finished their screen careers in a series of of generally lesser films for MGM and 20th Century-Fox. None were comparabale to their earlier efforts, but most had moments of hilarity that were remisicent and often based prior sequences from the previous films. Only the idependently produced, ATOLL K (1951), would remain. It was not a fitting exit for, arguably, the screen's greatest comedy team. Fortunately, after their earlier Hal Roach films were released to television in the 1950s, Stan and Ollie found a succeeding generations of new fans, who continue to view and appreciate their work to this day. Re-release theatrical trailer for the 15 chapter serial, THE SECRET CODE, starring Paul Kelly and Anne Nagel. Un er the expert direction of serial and western director, Spencer Gordon Bennet, this World War II serial was an abrupt depature from the studio's previous James Horne-helmed cliffhangers which had emphasized broad comedy and frantic pacing over more strenuous elements. With Bennet at the megaphone, action was they key ingredient of this chapterplay which followed the efforts of a the masked "Black Commando" to stop an homefront Axis spy ring sabotaging America's war effort. In addition to stalwart performance from leads Paul Kelly (starring in his only serial) and Anne Nagel, each episode featured a brief segment with instructions on "How to Decode Secret Message" featuring familiar character actor, Selmer Jackson portraying "Major Henry Burton" of Army Intelligence. It was just the stuff that Saturdays were made of....
