Video footage of one of my 'we're all looking holograms'
In response to the looming eviction Ian Montgomery began constructing Shanty Town on the roof of Flux Factory. The idea was to make functioning shelters from collected materials, exploring the aesthetics of survival in New York. When the fire department ordered its dismantling Shanty Town consisted of two and a half shanties, a saloon and many dreams. Martina Mrongovius’ postcard series are holograms that capture an essence of daydream with the dynamics of memory. Each piece is designed as a message. Postcard from Shanty Town is a digital-analogue montage made from photographs that have been mapped into the holographic image. Within the holographic space there are nine chapters, seen as you move vertically, each documenting the people, structures and their relationships. The dynamics of the hologram postcard allow you to explore this place that only exists in memories and splinters.
Martina Mrongovius, 2007 multiplexed holographic image 300 x 400 mm, Amber LED illumination from ‘We’re all looking’ - a project to create holographic images from choreographed photography moving side to side the images reveals a 360 degree view of the Exhibition Building in Melbourne. Moving up and down shifts the position of the figures who are also the photographers capturing the image. This series of holograms explores the form of multi-perspectival scenes in which the images are formed by the relationships between the viewer and the viewed. The event We’re all looking involved 26 people who captured images in choreographed formations around Melbourne. The formations relate to the symmetries of the space and architecture. By aligning the images with respect to the participants, the figures blend together becoming a visual anchor to the holographic space. The holographic image-space is formed by a structure of superimposed perspectives. www.holographics.com.au
