Badialy Cissoko was born in Senegal, West Africa, in the vilige of Kazamasa. Born into a greot family, Badialy’s grandfather is still to this day King of the Kora. His father is a famous musician, and his mother a beautiful singer. Badialy has been playing the Kora , drumming, singing and dancing since out of the womb. He grew up listening to the sounds of Miles Davis, Jimmy Hendrix, and Bob Marley. His greatest influence, however, is his grandfather, Sougoulou Cissoko. Badialy’s greatest desire is to bridge his traditional family styles with a moor contemporary feel. “Music has no borders,” says Badialy. He has toured throughout the world, recorded on many CD’s and motin picture soundtracks. He is currently in production on his debut CD titled Jialy (story teller).
The Open Door Orchestra (ODO) is a revolving ensemble of players from around the world that utilizes an array of instrumentation and contemporary influences to create timeless music. ODO artistically blends musical styles, taking the listener on an ambient, avant-garde, world beat journey. Musical director Shannon Michael Terry founded ODO in 1999 in Los Angeles. “ODO was created as an ever-expanding music and sound experience. The music will always grow and change. The way I see it the OPEN DOOR ORCHESTRA Is as an empty canvas of sound possibility waiting to be filled by an always changing ensemble of musicians sound artists and poets, it is a production concept that will last a lifetime. “My main interest is to bring ancient and new instruments together on one stage, to hear beyond the confines of traditional music structures. I’m interested in sound colors and how they work together to create the overall environment and conceptual field.”
