On October 9, 2008, Reading Is Fundamental traveled to East Los Angeles to hold a special read aloud event at Joseph A. Gascon Elementary featuring award winning children's book author Amada Irma Perez.
During the week of August 17, 2009, Reading Is Fundamental, Communities In Schools New Orleans, the National PTA, and Macy's partnered together in the spirit of President Obama's United We Serve initiative to bring the joy of reading to 2,500 children currently living in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Dr. Paula Powers, reading specialist and a local inspiration at Yorkshire Elementary School dressed as âthe Cat In the Hatâ to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Children of all grades were treated to every Dr. Seuss story imaginable from Fox In Socks to The Lorax. Click here to see the powers Paula has over the children! Hello and Welcome! Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most. Founded in 1966, RIF is the oldest and largest children's and family nonprofit literacy organization in the United States. RIF’s highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provides 4.5 million children with 16 million new, free books and literacy resources each year.
