- Boris Karloff is Chinese detective James Lee Wong. This film is set in San Francisco and, of course, is dated due to the racial stereotyping social norms of the day BUT if you watch closely you may find that this series stands out in stark contrast to the Charlie Chan series AND that Boris himself speaks no broken English (popular Asian stereotype of the time) AND is presented as a more intelligent and calm person than any of his Caucasian supporting cast - if you can get past the fact that James Lee Wong (a fictional character) was not portrayed by an Asian actor (common for the period) you may find what I did - that this film was somewhat risky for the time.
