Johnny Burke (1851-1930) was a balladeer of Irish origin from St John's in Newfoundland, Canada. Apparently cod liver oil was a traditional medicine in Newfoundland. A rich source of vitamins A and D, it was made by a sun-curing method and served in bottles without further processing. Unfortunately it tasted revolting. I first heard this song sung by Burl Ives, on his wonderful Coronation Concert album (1954). It has also been recorded by Oscar Brand, Val Doonican, Alan Mills and The Dubliners.
